Smallwood Primary School and Language Unit

Life At Smallwood

Welcome to Smallwood Primary School!

We pride ourselves on being a vibrant, nurturing community where every child is encouraged to shine. Here is a breakdown of what makes our school the perfect place for your child to grow, learn, and succeed.

A Nurturing Start to Every Day

At Smallwood, we believe a happy, healthy child is a successful learner, which is why we go the extra mile to ensure our families feel supported from the very first day. Every morning, our Senior Leadership Team provides a personal touch by greeting parents and pupils at the gate with a smile. To ensure everyone is fueled for learning and ready to focus, we offer a free breakfast for every child. This warm welcome is furthered by our supportive teachers and teaching assistants, who provide the individual attention and support every child deserves

Wellbeing & Support

Mental health and emotional resilience are at the heart of our ethos, supported by dedicated spaces and programs designed for our pupils’ social development. We provide professional emotional support and quiet, safe spaces through Place2Be and our Nurture Club, allowing children to express themselves freely. This culture of kindness is furthered by Bees Buddies, where older pupils take on mentorship roles to provide peer-to-peer support across year groups. Additionally, we offer tailored academic Year 6 Boosters to ensure our oldest students feel confident and fully prepared as they approach their transition to secondary school.

Active Bodies, Active Minds

At Smallwood, we are incredibly lucky to have extensive outdoor facilities that allow our children to stay active and connected to nature. Unlike many urban schools, we boast our own school field and vast amounts of play space for sports and exploration. We make fitness a fun, communal habit through initiatives like the Mile a Day, Mini Marathon challenges, and our popular Bike Bus. Additionally, our Garden Project allows pupils to get stuck into nature, learning about sustainability and growth firsthand.

Celebrating Every Achievement

Every success—no matter how small—is celebrated at Smallwood. We highlight hard work and kindness through Weekly Achievement Awards and by crowning a Pupil of the Day, while our vibrant House system encourages healthy competition and a sense of belonging. Our pride in our students is visible throughout the school, with corridors bursting with colour from children’s work displayed across the school. This culminates in our end-of-year ‘Celebration of Achievement’ held at St Mary’s Church, where we recognize the incredible accomplishments of our pupils across the year.

Leadership & Pupil Voice

We don’t just teach; we listen. We empower our pupils to take charge of their school environment through various school committees and Pupil Voice initiatives, ensuring they have a real say in how Smallwood is run. By participating in School Plays, Sports Days, and our bi-annual assemblies at St Mary’s, children find their voice and build the lifelong confidence needed to succeed.

As part of the pupil voice programme, every week the classrooms are turned into hubs of active citizenship, global awareness, and pupil-led change. Through our teacher-led committees, children from year 2 to 6, step out of their year groups to join cross-age working groups. These sessions tackle some of the biggest challenges facing our world today - from saving energy and protecting biodiversity to children’s rights, eco-friendly transport, and cutting down on waste.

The impact of these sessions goes way beyond just finishing a project. Working in mixed-age groups means our oldest and youngest pupils collaborate as equals. Older children naturally step into mentorship and leadership roles, while the younger ones build massive confidence by sharing their ideas in a supportive, friendly space. Together, they learn how to debate passionately, make choices, and find compromises to drive real change.

These committees are like a living laboratory for big thinking. Instead of just pointing out problems like litter or wasted energy, the children look at the root causes, see how it affects our local community, and design practical solutions for our school. This hands-on problem-solving really sharpens their analytical skills, teaching them to look at the world with curiosity and a "can-do" attitude.
Ultimately, these weekly sessions bring our citizenship and PSHE lessons to life. This isn't just a classroom talk about democracy and responsibility—it’s the real-life experience of it. By giving our pupils a genuine voice in shaping a sustainable future, we’re building empathy, accountability, and a true understanding of their rights and roles in the world. At Smallwood Primary, we aren't just teaching children about society; we are empowering them to build a better one.

Enriching the Curriculum

At Smallwood Primary, we believe that learning extends far beyond the classroom walls, which is why we offer an extensive and diverse program of trips and visits for all year groups. Our pupils benefit from immersive cultural and historical experiences at iconic locations such as the British Museum, The Tower of London, and Hampton Court Palace. We also prioritise active and outdoor learning, with visits to Wimbledon Tennis, Vauxhall City Farm, and various sporting festivals, alongside unique performance opportunities at the Polka Theatre and Wandsworth Civic Centre. By engaging with our local community through visits to libraries, temples, and university workshops, we ensure our students develop a well-rounded understanding of the world around them.

Enrichment Beyond the Classroom

Beyond the classroom, our curriculum is enriched by a vast range of extracurricular activities designed to cater to every interest. We nurture the artists of the future through high-energy Rocksteady Music sessions and various creative clubs, while ensuring there is truly something for everyone with our extensive selection of after-school options. Our strong community spirit is fueled by an incredibly active PTFA and Open Classroom events that invite parents to engage directly with their child’s learning journey. Furthermore, pupils are given frequent opportunities to broaden their horizons through diverse educational visits. These trips include cultural and historical experiences at locations like the British Museum and the Tower of London, as well as active outings to Wimbledon Tennis and local city farms.
